WhatsApp Direct Send — Templates Without the Wait

Meta's new Direct Send feature lets you send utility and authentication messages without pre-creating templates. Here's what it does and when to use it.

Getting a WhatsApp template approved has always been the slow part of going live on the API. You write a message, submit it to Meta, and wait anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Miss a word, get rejected, try again.

Meta's new Direct Send feature (currently in beta) removes that wait for utility and authentication messages — you send the message and Meta creates the template automatically in the background.

The Difference

Old way

  1. Write template
  2. Submit to Meta
  3. Wait for approval
  4. Send message

Direct Send

  1. Send message with a category
  2. Meta uses a fallback template instantly
  3. Real template is auto-generated in the background

What Is Direct Send?

Direct Send is a new way to call Meta's /messages API. Instead of picking a pre-approved template by name, you include a category field (like utility or authentication) and Meta does the template matching for you:

  • If your message body matches an existing template, Meta uses it
  • If it doesn't, Meta uses a fallback onboarding template — your message still goes out
  • In the background, Meta creates a new template based on your message (with personal info redacted) so the next similar message uses it directly

Where It Helps Most

  • Utility messages — order confirmations, shipping updates, appointment reminders, payment receipts
  • Authentication messages — OTPs, login codes, verification prompts
  • New businesses going live who want to send messages on day one without spending a week on template approvals
  • Fast-moving product updates where you don't want to wait for each variation to be approved

Not for marketing messages.

Direct Send is scoped to utility and authentication only for now. Promotional and marketing messages still go through the normal template approval flow.

What Stays the Same

  • You still need an active WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)
  • You still need the customer to have opted in
  • You still pay the same per-conversation pricing based on category
  • The 24-hour service window rule doesn't change

What It Actually Solves

The big win is time-to-market. If you're integrating WhatsApp into your product for the first time, you no longer have to design and submit every possible utility variation before you can send anything. You ship, and Meta's template library grows around your actual traffic.

For businesses already running WhatsApp at scale, Direct Send makes it easier to send messages with slightly different wording (different languages, different product names, different regions) without maintaining hundreds of templates.

Availability

Direct Send is in beta. Features are subject to change and may roll out in phases. To use it, your WABA needs to be onboarded to the feature, which provisions the fallback onboarding templates.
