In the past, if you wanted to use the WhatsApp Business API, you had to give up your Business App. The moment your number moved to the API, it stopped working in the app. Many businesses were afraid to make the switch because of this.

Meta fixed this with Coexistence. Now your WhatsApp Business App keeps working even after you connect the same number to the Cloud API. You can use both at the same time.

Teambox / CRM

Customer sends a message → it shows up in both the Business App on your phone and your API platform (like Teambox). You pick where to reply from.

What Changes with Coexistence?

  • Your number stays active in the Business App — nothing breaks
  • Incoming messages show up in both the app and your API platform
  • You can send messages from either side
  • The API unlocks features the app doesn't have: chatbots, AI replies, bulk broadcasts, CRM, and integrations
  • Old chats stay in the app — they do not copy over to the API side

Do's

  • Do keep Coexistence on when you first connect — it's the default during Embedded Signup, so just don't turn it off
  • Do decide which side your team replies from — if two people reply from the app and the API separately, the customer gets two different answers
  • Do use the API side for automation, AI, and broadcasts — these only work through the API, not the app
  • Do test everything on the API platform before you stop using the app
  • Do train your team on the new platform while both are running — that's the whole point of Coexistence

Don'ts

  • Don't reply to the same customer from both the app and the API — pick one to avoid confusion
  • Don't expect old chat history to appear in your API platform — past conversations stay in the app only
  • Don't worry about uninstalling the app — removing it from your phone does not affect the API connection; they run independently
  • Don't forget that the API has a 24-hour reply window — after 24 hours of no customer message, you can only send pre-approved templates (not free-form text)
  • Don't send the same broadcast from both the app and the API — your customers will get it twice

How to Get Started

  1. Sign up on a Cloud API platform like Teambox
  2. Start the Embedded Signup flow — Coexistence is on by default
  3. Verify your business and connect your number
  4. Both channels go live — your app keeps working, and your API platform starts receiving messages too

No risk, no downtime. Try the API while your app keeps running as usual.
