WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, Cloud API, BSPs — it's confusing. Here's the simple breakdown.

The Three WhatsApp Products

1. WhatsApp (Personal)

The green app 2+ billion people use daily. Personal messaging only — no business features, no team access, no automation. One number, one device.

2. WhatsApp Business App (Free)

Released in 2018 for small businesses. Adds a business profile, product catalog, quick replies, labels, and basic auto-replies. But it's still single-user (up to 4 linked devices) — no team inbox, no CRM, no real automation. If your team needs to reply, you're passing one phone around.

Best for: Solo businesses with fewer than 50 messages/day.

3. WhatsApp Business API

Not an app — it's a programmatic API that connects your number to software like CRMs, chatbots, and booking systems. You get unlimited team members, full automation, broadcast messaging to thousands, integrations (Calendar, HubSpot, Shopify), and analytics.

The API has no UI of its own — you use it through platforms like Teambox.

Best for: Teams of 2+, businesses wanting automation or AI.

What Are BSPs?

Before 2022, you couldn't access the API directly. You had to go through a BSP (Business Solution Provider) — companies like Twilio, 360dialog, or Gupshup that Meta authorized to host the API. They'd manage your number, templates, and billing — but added markup fees, vendor lock-in, and slow onboarding (days or weeks).

2022: The Cloud API Changed Everything

In May 2022, Meta launched the Cloud API — letting any business connect directly without a BSP middleman. The key changes:

  • No mandatory BSP — connect directly via Meta's Graph API
  • Free hosting — Meta runs the infrastructure; you only pay per-conversation fees
  • Instant setup — connect your number in under 10 minutes via Embedded Signup
  • Faster features — new capabilities land on Cloud API first; On-Premises is being phased out

Coexistence

Worried about losing your number when switching to the API? Meta's Coexistence feature lets you run the Business App and Cloud API on the same number simultaneously. Messages flow to both. You can test the API, train your team, and fully transition when ready. Note: old chat history stays in the app and doesn't migrate.

Which Should You Use?

  • Personal chats → WhatsApp
  • Solo, <50 messages/day → WhatsApp Business App
